Abstract: In this theoretical review, the general characteristics and criteria for diagnosis of Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAT) are analyzed, in particular, the psychopathological perspective. The following is taken into account: the contributions of several research groups, the impact of their conclusions after the publication of the fourth version of DSM-IV-TR (APA, 2000), the epidemiologic data and cognitive and somatic variables associated to this disorder.
