Abstract:
Body image refers not only to physical appearance but also to body functioning aspects, strength, degree of femininity-masculinity, levels of body safety, and feelings about emotion (Pruzinsky and Cash, 1990). The aim of this work is to inquire into coping strategies and their relation to body image in school-age adolescents of the city of San Luis. Body Shape Questionnaire (BSQ) and Adolescent Coping Scale (ACS) were administered to 142 adolescents. The results of the BSQ show that 70, 42% are under the Q1 value (76, 5), 28, 87% are near the median value or the value given to Q2 (119) and the remaining percentage (0, 7%) are over the value given to the upper quartile (Q3= 161, 5). The most widely used strategies observed in the coping scale were: worrying, finding difficulty in concentrating to solve problems, belonging search, having positive thinking, spending time with close friends, struggling and succeeding and looking for relaxing and physical entertainment in all the sample.
