Abstract:
This work deals with Hume and Kant’s arguments against the philosophic-cosmological principle of “unmoved Mover” in the second half of the eighteenth century. In western thinking, this principle was in force from Aristotle to Newton. Hume argues against the proofs of the unmoved mover stating the unnecessity of God in the causal linking of nature. Kant refutes the evidence of God’s existence showing that although the speculative reason provides “all the resources of its dialectic” to those proofs, they have pseudo-rational elements that invalidate them. Hume and Kant’s radical critiqueconstitutes a turning point in the history of science, so that philosophy and science start to conceive a model of self-sufficient universe
