Abstract:
This paper analyzes how the child is treated as moral subject. From a perspective of applied ethics, three types of treatment have been identified:the paternal-moral, normative-legal and the differential. Each one of them approaches different logics to deal with the ethical problematic around the figure of the child. The first type conceives the child only as a “socialbeing” who has to be looked after but not as a moral subject; the second type introduces the universal dimension through the phenomenon of the human rights. In this case, the child is treated as a worthy being, a subject having full rights; and the third one introduces the particular and singular perspective, putting special emphasis on the child’s constant alternation between autonomy and subjective vulnerability. Finally, the idea that the child is “capable of”, just like other moral subjects is put forward. The child’s possibility of self-fulfilment is constructed in relation to the other that makesit possible or not. With respect to the ethics of intersubjectivity, childhood becomes for the other, namely the father, educator or professional an invitation to act with responsible prudence
