Abstract:
This paper studies the possible relationship between poverty and education. It particularly focuses on the way that the variables illiteracy and functional illiteracy behave in the city of San Luis, and analyses them by comparing the situation in the economically violated sector of San Luis, the Cuyo region, and the rest of the country. Primary data were drawn from the Permanent Household Survey for the first half of 2007, and the INFOSTAT software was used to process them. These data add to some more recent information on the topic. The results show that the variables illiteracy and functional illiteracy in the province of San Luis in 2007 are slightly above the national average; however, they are similar to the situation in the Cuyo region. By working on the sub-sample of the economically violated population and comparing it with the total sample of San Luis, it is observed that the highest percentages of illiteracy and functional illiteracy are concentrated in the sub-sample. This suggests the existence of a substantial relationship between poverty and the deterioration of educational conditions. Moreover, recent data show that while illiteracy rates have decreased in the province and the region, the relationship between poverty and worsening educational conditions remains significant.
